How To | Frequent Flyer Facial

To kick off the new year for Beyond 3 Layers, I'm going to be posting about what we all (if not most of us) start doing in the beginning of the year. Travelling.

The skin on holiday goes through a ton of experiences (and it's definitely not prepared for it) and you end up with that random mark or a break out with no warning whatsoever. There are a lot of factors that are responsible for this. Today's post will be about what happens on the flight and what you can do to prepare. Oh what fun!

Planning a trip to a new destination comes with the stress of having to pack all the beauty essentials. We spend hours trying to buy all the mini products or jars to fit our beauty and skincare then spend another few hours trying to fit everything in the suitcase. Very tiresome. I have frequented a few long haul flights and I finally found my own way to keep my skin looking fresh as I walk off the plane.

Hydrate Your Body

  • I mean drink loads and loads of water. I'm talking about grabbing 2 cups of water when they come around with the drink cart. The plane is extremely dehydrating. This is because they are recycling a lot of the air that is already in the plane. There is less water getting filtered each time, so when the cycle of air comes around again it is essentially dryer. Also, the longer the flight the dryer your skin looks at the end of it.
  • Drinking heaps of water can be a nuisance because, yes you have to line up for the bathroom, but you would rather get off the plane knowing that all the toxins were flowing out of your body rather than being pressurised in it. It will also make sure the skin remains plump on the inside so you can work on polishing the outside.

Protect Your Skin

Products clockwise: Nature Republic Green Caviar Hydrogel Mask, Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF 50+, Origins Overnight Drink Up Intensive Mask, Lauren Napier Cleansing Cloth, Sephora Pearl Eye Mask.

  • Since check-in bags still require you to keep your liquids to under 100ml each item I bring very little skincare - if I do, it's probably a travel version of the full size. Also, I don't tend to bring my serums, lotions, toners, scrubs on board because really there's no point.
  • My go-to products are sleeping pack (overnight masks), sheet masks, moisturiser, sunscreen (depending on when I land) and cleansing wipes. That's it.
  • All these products are a lot cleaner and easier to handle. For example, the cleansing wipe is like those ones they give you on a flight. Rip it open, wipe your face and neck, and throw it out. Then you can go on to put your mask on.
  • I usually opt for sleeping packs or overnight masks because I find them less messy and easier to apply. It's just like applying a moisturiser You also won't scare the air hostess and passengers. The ones I am loving are Origins Overnight Drink Up Intensive, Nature Republic Sleeping pack. The Origins is far more travel friendly though because of the squeeze tube.
  • Oh and don't forget eye gel masks, they change your appearance so quickly! Get any that you like and watch those bags shrink.

Minimal Makeup

  • My travel  makeup bag is laughable, considering the industry I work in. I keep it super simple with the look. Fresh dewy skin, brows, mascara and a tinted lip. Before boarding the plane I'm usually makeup free, because let's face it, we ain't impressing anybody at an altitude of 10000 meters. Also, think of the congestion that would take place when your skin gets dehydration and absorbs whatever it can (i.e your foundation). No thank you.
  • Keep it simple with a compact - a cushion is a really great option especially because they are far more hydrating and range in loads of finishes to suit your preferences. Brows and mascara keep the face framed and the eyes awake. You can toss in a concealer if you're looking extra tired. Remember that this is just to get you looking alive for when the customs officers question you. It's also so you feel refreshed. A smokey eye is not refreshing. Lastly a tinted lip balm can just revive your whole complexion.
  • My go to's for this are: Lancome's Miracle Cushion, Etude House's Drawing Eyebrow Pencil , Perricone's No Lipstick Lipstick, Ciate's Wonderwand Mascara. They interchange often but I generally keep the basics there.

Lastly, your holiday should be enjoyed to it's fullest. So don't stress too much about the plane. These are just tips if you wanted to improve your skin whilst on the long flight.

Happy travelling.
